Goodbye Facebook App

This past weekend I took a break from Facebook.  I deleted it from both my iPhone and iPad.  Since I rarely go on my computer over the weekend I wasn’t tempted by the bookmark I have for it.  I didn’t miss it at all!  I still haven’t put the app back on my phone, but I did check my notifications on the computer.  I like the idea of not having facebook on my phone.  I won’t be tempted to check it throughout the day.  I won’t miss anything!  I might put it back on my iPad, just for ease when I’m relaxing in the evening, but maybe not.

I did go on Pinterest a lot more this weekend, since I didn’t have Facebook to fall back on, ha! Pinterest always makes me hungry since I follow so many food boards.  I love Pinterest for visual bookmarking and getting inspiration.  I used to have a ton of photos saved on my computer for interiors and hair cuts, but now I just use it on Pinterest.  But it is easy to get lost on there for way too long.  I will need to work on this!

I have also trimmed my blog reader down again to only my favorites.  I follow a lot of bloggers on twitter, so if they have a post that sounds great I can read it that way.

And I am still loving Instagram, so I do check that a lot!  It’s just fun to see.

I am not doing very well on cutting back my social media use. I have this crazy desire to catch up on everything! It is so weird because none of this stuff really matters.

My RSS reader feels overwhelming and I already cut it down at the beginning of this new year in anticipation of this goal, which included all of the wedding blogs except for two that are just great. There are some blogs I really love and they help me with business ideas or just life ideas. There are some others I love but aren’t useful. I don’t have the time to read everything anymore. I know I should cut it down to just the bare essentials that I can read while eating my breakfast/lunch/weekend for 30 minutes or so! This is going to be a weekend goal!

I have always had a love/hate relationship with Twitter and I’m in the hate part right now. I guess this is a good thing because I’m not checking it at all except to see if someone contacted me once or twice a day.

Instagram, while I love it, is tiring me out! I am always checking it and liking almost everybody’s pictures! I need some overhaul of this, but not sure how to do that except maybe to cut back on the number of people I follow!

Let’s see what I can get done this weekend where I will have a social media free weekend again to see if that helps cut it back!

I think my goal on “Comparison is the thief of joy.” - Theodore Roosevelt might need some explanation.  There have been a lot of times where I would be looking at friends’ stuff and feel like I was missing out.  And wondering why I wasn’t invited.  Or I would get caught up in one of my internet friends’ life and wonder why I can’t be as happy as them.  Or whatever.  I would compare myself and my life and my choices to theirs.  Not only is that silly, but it is unhealthy!  I have decided to cut my time on social media.  I want to reach out and hang out with people and do the things that I want to do.  Real life doing is so much better than virtual life stalking sulking.

I just want to do what makes me happy.  I want to spend less time online.  I want to make goals and actually achieve them.  I want to read books instead of watching tv.  I want to go for walks instead of surfing twitter/instagram/facebook/pinterest.

I turned off all notifications on my iPhone and iPad for my email and the majority of my apps.  I moved them off the first page of my iPhone home screen.  It was honestly scary at first.  But it is so freeing!  I already love it and do not miss having those bright red bubbles there at all!  I can check it when I have a free five minutes, but I’m not a slave to it.  I can check it, surf it, close it and then go back to doing something real.  I highly recommend it!

Last weekend I didn’t check any of my social media outlets at all.  It was good, I did a lot of cleaning and planning.  But it wasn’t great.  I don’t have much time during the week to just veg out, so I didn’t feel very rested after a busy weekend with no time spent online, just relaxing.  We’ll see when I try that again.

Happy New Year! I waited a few days to post my 2012 summary this year. I’ve been working through Year in Review summaries from Lara Casey and Gina Zeidler. It has been so powerful to think and plan and visualize. You can see my Pinterest board for 2013 here.

If you would like to review my 2012 goals, please click here. This year wasn’t the best for achieving goals but I did achieve 50% of them! I think the problem lay in the fact that wedding planning and owning a house took up much more than I anticipated. I will do some summary posts over the next week on a few of the goals not previously discussed.

The things that worked for me in 2012 were: 1. Being grateful and honestly appreciating people. It really improves relationships and life. Life and true happiness lie in relationships. Loved doing Thirty Days of Thanks in November! 2. Putting my all into everything pays off every time. Living with Jesse, making a job I dislike work, finding an exercise class I love, earning a new job, buying my first house. 3. Taking time for myself helps me grow. Planning and creating vision is crucial. 4. Learned a great lesson about being the woman I want o be despite what my job is. I am not defined by my job but by who I am.

In 2013 I am saying NO to…mindless tv watching, checking Facebook/twitter/Instagram/etc every five minutes, comparing my life to others’, feeling sorry for myself, fear of the unknown, putting anybody before Jesse, worrying, being lazy all weekend, fast food, staying up late, being too harsh on myself, negativity, perfection, wasting time online, over-thinking, and clutter.

In 2013 I am saying YES to…growing relationships, buying birthday presents, sending cards in the mail, doing something active each weekend day, snuggling with Jesse, laughing, dancing in my pjs, friends, meal planning, relaxing, personal photo projects, working hard, approaching new things with curiosity and excitement, long walks, weekends without phones at all, grace, smiling, positivity, outfit planning, phone calls, trying new things, reading, random acts of kindness, journaling, letting people in, and joy.
